About Us

Dwarkadas J. Sanghvi College of Engineering started the Bachelor’s program in Mechanical Engineering and the Master’s program in Mechanical Engineering (with specialization in Manufacturing Systems Engineering) in the year 2011 with an intake of 60 seats and 18 seats respectively. The intake of the Bachelor's program was increased to 120 in the very next year and in the year 2022, the intake of the Bachelor’s program was increased to 180 seats. In the year 2013, the college started the Doctorate program in Mechanical Engineering with an intake of 10 seats.

This program is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation with effect from the Academic Year 2018-19.

The department features state-of-the-art infrastructure including well-developed laboratories for core courses like Fluid Mechanics & Machinery, Industrial Fluid Power, Automobile Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning, etc. It also features a full-fledged workshop that can hone the students’ knowledge and provide hands-on skills related to manufacturing. The department, with the help of the college management, is continuously striving to develop the technical as well as professional skills of its students by exposing them to industry culture through industrial visits, expert lectures, and seminars.

The department is proudly associated with 4 major student chapters:

1. SAE (SOCIETY OF AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERS)

2. ISHRAE (INDIAN SOCIETY OF HEATING REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING ENGINEERS)

3. ISME (INDIAN SOCIETY OF MANUFACTURING ENGINEERS)

4. RAS (ROBOTICS AND AUTOMATION SOCIETY)

These student chapters provide a platform for students to develop their technical, management & organization capabilities by organizing and managing workshops and by participating in various national and international competitions.

Why Choose Us?

Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest and evergreen branches of engineering, which has over a period contributed to several innovations. Infact, it can be termed as the mother of all "Engineering”. While, the other fields envision a solution to our existing problems, Mechanical Engineering has the power to implement those ideas and offer a real world working solution. Mechanical Engineering deals with the concepts of thermal and fluid engineering, mechanics & structural analysis, design & development of refrigeration & air-conditioning systems and manufacturing. Mechanical Engineering hones your critical thinking skills and helps you solve problems creatively. It is a field with expanding career options and good growth potential. Life’s best lessons are learnt by staying observant and learning to assimilate the information. Mechanical engineers work well as entrepreneurs as well as in collaborative environments across many industries and multiple locations. Skills of mechanical engineers are needed across multiple and varied industries. Below is the list of major domain areas, where a mechanical engineer can specialise and contribute.

Major domain areas of Mechanical Engineering

Design - In this role, the mechanical engineers would be responsible for designing either a thermal system, mechanical system or an HVAC system using different tools like conducting research programs, and by applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat transfer, materials engineering, computer aided analysis and optimization techniques. They evaluate mechanical and electromechanical systems and products, designs parts, components, create CAD models, including part and assembly drawings, Bill of Materials (BOMs) to support manufacturing, testing and assembly in-order to meet requirements of assigned projects. They are also responsible for the research and design of a company's new products and systems.

Manufacturing & Production - Mechanical engineers are also involved with the design, construction and operations of all kinds of machineries. They conceptualize a design for any product to be manufactured. They also develop, test and manufacture state-of-the-art machinery. A mechanical engineer is responsible for inspecting and maintaining the performance of all mechanical equipments and machineries to support the production processes in a manufacturing centre and review efficiencies and eliminate waste within the manufacturing process to deliver high quality products/components to clearly defined standards.

Robotics & Mechatronics – Robotic process automation and robotics itself are the booming new trends. Almost every industry is looking for automation solutions, in order to increase efficiency and cut down on operation costs. However, the implementation of the same requires the supervision and efforts from skilled mechanical engineers. Whether it is the design and manufacturing of a new robotics system or the implementation of process automation for inventory management, robotics and mechatronics will always have a big role for the mechanical engineers.

Power and Metal Plants – Power industry is one of the major contributors to the economy of our nation. There are several thermal power plants all over the country and since the power plants use the principles of thermodynamics and material science, mechanical engineering graduates are required there as well.

Quality Improvement & Assurance – It’s a way of preventing mistakes and defects in manufactured products and avoiding problems, when delivering products or services to customers. The role of mechanical engineer in this will be to include designing quality standards, inspecting materials, equipment, processes & products, developing quality control systems and determining corrective actions.

Logistics and Supply Chain Management (LSCM) – It covers the planning and control of both the physical movement of materials and the resources used in the supply process from raw materials to consumable products. The LSCM process represents a single "value chain” targeted to achieve defined corporate goals by adding value to a product in terms of time and place within the overall corporate offer. The role of mechanical engineer there is to analyse and optimize supply chain operations to meet the business requirements. They evaluate supply chain processes, oversee inventory management & distribution and build strong vendor relationships.

Analysis and Testing – This job role requires analysis & testing of machine parts, systems & equipment and checking for faults that could have come up in the manufacturing or design processes.

Installation & Maintenance - The job role involves knowledge of installation of machine parts in the industrial location, along with their proper maintenance as per the provided specifications.

Research - Last but not the least, research is one of the most exciting job roles in mechanical engineering, which includes researching and implementing findings for the development of new products using the latest technologies. Mechanical Engineer’s role in specific domain research as well in multi-disciplinary research is highly valuable in the society.
